MK Dov Khenin (Joint List) is seeking to force a change in one of the most beloved events of the Hanukkah holiday – the annual “torch run” from Modi'in to Jerusalem.

The "torch run" remembers the battles of the Maccabees, launched from their home town until they liberated the Holy Temple in Jerusalem from the Syrian Greeks who occupied it some 2,300 years ago.

The event includes dozens of runners who carry and pass from hand to hand a torch that is lit at the tombs of the Maccabees near Modi'in, to the Kotel, the Western Wall. Along the way, the torch passes through sites significant to the history of Hanukkah, including the Old City walls.

As Jerusalem was an ancient Jewish city, some of those sites are in the Muslim Quarter – and it is this portion of the torch run that Khenin seeks to change. The torch run will this year be integrated with the monthly “Walk Around the Walls” of the Old City that many people participate in. This month, Khenin wants the march cancelled, or if that is not possible, at least to prevent the integration of the torch run with the march.

Khenin said that the situation was “too sensitive” to allow the torch run and the march to take place. Khenin sent a letter to Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan asking that he intervene in the matter.
