The National Council of Young Israel (NCYI) made the following statement today following the announcement that a deal has been reached with Iran regarding its nuclear program:

July 14, 2015
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

“The National Council of Young Israel strongly opposes the agreement that has been reached with Iran, which falls far short of effectively shutting down Iran’s nuclear program. As Iran’s leaders belittle the United States and Israel with impunity and openly deride the rest of the civilized world, it is inconceivable that the Obama administration and its P5+1 partners would seek to appease this rogue nation by offering them a sweetheart deal. “By granting unprecedented sanctions relief before Iran has proven that it will abide by the agreement that has been reached, the Obama administration is ceding any leverage that it may have had to ensure that Iran takes the necessary steps to curtail its nuclear ambitions. Giving Iran an immediate $100 to $150 billion respite from the sanctions is nonsensical and inexplicably provides the Iranian government with a windfall that is completely undeserved. Providing Iran with vast financial resources while it continues to expand its terrorist activities across the globe and failing to include a requirement that it abandons terrorism and ends its ballistic missile production is absolutely baffling and totally negligent.

“Unfettered access to Iran’s nuclear sites is essential if there is to be any hope whatsoever of stopping Iran’s dangerous nuclear ambitions and ensuring that they can never produce the type of destructive and deadly nuclear weaponry that they so desperately crave. Unless international inspectors have the ability to inspect suspected nuclear facilities anytime and anywhere, Iran will continue pulling the wool over the world’s eyes and this deal will not be worth the paper it is written on.

“Allowing Iran to retain a stockpile of enriched nuclear material is a symbol of the complete ineffectiveness of this agreement. By neglecting to insist that Iran relinquish control of 100% of its enriched uranium, the Obama administration is in essence expecting that the Iranian leadership will keep their word and do the right thing, despite the fact that history suggests otherwise.

“The mere fact that there have been discussions about ultimately lifting the UN Security Council’s arms embargo on Iran and allowing them to import advanced weapons is akin to giving a box of matches to an arsonist. It is a dangerous and foolhardy concession that could have lasting and lethal
repercussions.

“At this stage, it is critical that Congress engage in a serious and systematic review of this flawed deal and act swiftly and decisively in an effort to prevent a potential disaster that could have a dire effect on the stability in the Middle East and have reverberations around the world. With Iran’s track record of divisive declarations and destructive behavior, the world cannot afford to move forward with a substandard agreement that virtually ensures that Iran will continue its pursuit of deadly nuclear weapons. We call on our Congressional representatives to do the right thing and use their power to veto this incredibly bad deal.”

For the past 102 years, the National Council of Young Israel has ably served the broader Jewish community. With more than 25,000 member families and nearly 200 branch synagogues throughout the United States, Canada, and Israel, the National Council of Young Israel is a multi-faceted organization that embraces Jewish communal needs and often takes a leading role in tackling the important issues that face the Jewish community in North America and Israel.
