The Great 5:32 Canard - Richard Butrick

by Richard Butrick

Passage after passage in the Koran explain the fate of those who show disrespect for Islam and its prophet. From Salman Rushdie to Charlie Hebdo, the West has just seen what happens to non-innocents. Uppity infidels who fail to realize their second class status and ride in the back of the bus get it in the neck.

The president cites it. Pious Mullahs cite it. Islamofascist 5th column organizations from CAIR to AMPAC cite it. The “it” is the famous “religion of peace” clause from the Koran. Only it is cited with a minor elision.

In the president’s recent "Summit on Countering Violent Extremism," Obama held up a copy of the Koran and cited 5:32 as proof that Islam is a religion of peace, "The Quran says whoever kills an innocent, it is as if he has killed all mankind." And previously in his 2009 Cairo speech the president said: "The Holy Quran teaches that whoever kills an innocent, it is as if he has killed all mankind; and the Holy Quran also says whoever saves a person, it is as if he has saved all mankind." 5:32 has become the Holy Grail of Islam’s religion of peace contingent and is used to cower Islam’s critics and back up claims of Islamophobia.

Trouble is, a minor little caveat in 5:32 which explains the Koranic version of “innocents” is conveniently left out. A little caveat, moreover, which is further “elucidated” in 5:33. The caveat?
  - unless … for corruption in the land -
Here is the full text of 5:32
5:32 (Sahih International) We decreed upon the Children of Israel that whoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption [done] in the land - it is as if he had slain mankind entirely. And whoever saves one - it is as if he had saved mankind entirely. And our messengers had certainly come to them with clear proofs. Then indeed many of them, [even] after that, throughout the land, were transgressors.
And just what is it that is to befall transgressors who cause corruption in the land?
5:33: (Sahih International) Indeed, the penalty for those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger and strive upon earth [to cause] corruption is none but that they be killed or crucified or that their hands and feet be cut off from opposite sides or that they be exiled from the land. That is for them a disgrace in this world; and for them in the Hereafter is a great punishment,
It doesn’t take much to be a transgressor. Disbelieving or denying “Our” revelations will do the trick:
5:10 And they who disbelieve and deny Our revelations, such are rightful owners of hell.

A declaration of peace? 5:32 together with 5:33 is more like a declaration of dismemberment against all “transgressors” who would spread “corruption” in the land merely by failing to show the proper deference to Islam and its followers. Those who fail to recognize the superiority of Islam and its followers and would dare to denigrate Islam or its prophet are no innocents.

Those who live by the elision die by the elision? Funny? Maybe not so funny.
